Disinfectant Efficacy

Disinfectant and Sanitizer Testing Services

Nelson Labs Bozeman has streamlined our processes, as well as our pricing structure, to better meet the expectations of our customers. We now have an accelerated study initiation and protocol process to help move your studies into the lab and provide quality data as quickly as possible. Our microbiologists perform hard-surface-disinfectant and -sanitizer testing for both EPA and Health Canada guidelines. Whether your product is a germicidal spray, towelette, or concentrate, we can help you with your product testing and labeling claims.

These tests are performed by contaminating test carriers with test organisms, drying them, and then exposing them to the disinfectant for a specified contact time. Post-treatment results can be produced either qualitatively or quantitatively, depending on the test method.

Base Claim Testing

The OCSPP 810 guidelines provide detailed instructions on how to design and conduct the studies, including the selection of test organisms, test conditions, and performance criteria. They also specify the data that should be collected and reported, such as the concentration of active ingredients, test durations, and statistical analyses.

By requiring companies to conduct these standardized tests, the EPA aims to ensure that the registered products are safe and effective for their intended uses. This helps protect human health and the environment by providing consumers with reliable and scientifically validated information about the performance of the products they purchase.

It’s important to note that compliance with the OCSPP 810 guidelines is a prerequisite for registration, and companies must submit the test data to the EPA as part of their registration application. The EPA reviews the data to determine whether the product meets the necessary performance criteria before granting registration.

Addition Claim and Emerging Pathogen Testing

The EPA requires disinfectant manufacturers to provide scientific evidence to support additional claims beyond the base claims covered under the EPA OCSPP 810 guidelines. These additional claims may include:

  • specific efficacy against emerging pathogens
  • extended residual activity
  • compatibility with different surfaces or materials.

At Nelson Labs, our experienced team of scientists and experts is well-versed in the EPA’s requirements for disinfectant registration and can guide you through the process of conducting testing to support your additional claims. With state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge technologies, we offer a wide range of testing services tailored to your specific needs, ensuring that your product meets the necessary efficacy standards.
