Nelson Laboratories Celebrates 28 Years of Growth and Success

Celebrating its 28th Anniversary, Nelson Laboratories and its staff gathered for an old fashioned cake-decoratingNelson-Labs contest to raise money for a worthy charitable donation.

Employees and staff were divided into teams of five people and were given 30 minutes to decorate an anniversary cake. All had fun, and the cakes were auctioned off silently. Money raised was donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

“We are proud of who we are as a company and that we can celebrate our 28th anniversary,” said Jeffery Nelson, president and CEO. “We are very grateful to the many contributors who have helped us become who we are today. We’ve been fortunate to associate with such a great group of people who work so hard and who are so willing to help support organizations who benefit so many people such as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.”

Dr. Jerry R. and Lynda S. Nelson in Salt Lake City started Nelson Laboratories October 1, 1985. The company’s first lab housed five employees and offered a little more than 40 tests. Within three years, the laboratory moved into a 7,500 sq. ft. facility with 25 employees and offered more than 100 tests. Later the company built a 24,000 sq. ft. custom, state-of-the-art facility and lab with 75 employees, new capabilities and offering more than 200 tests.

Continuing its rapid pace of growth, Nelson Laboratories added to the existing building more than doubling its lab space. Then in 2010, once again broke ground to construct a new building that would create more than 125,000 sq. ft. of facility and lab space, house more than 500 scientists, and staff with more than 60 registered and specialist microbiologists conducting more than 400 microbiological and analytical tests.

The company attributes its success to three key factors that have been a constant guide:

  • Hire great people and empower them to make a difference.
  • Listen to the customer and take great care of them.
  • Choose suppliers and partners with shared values who will stand with you in good times and bad.

“We are in a strong position to continue our growth and compete in our rapidly changing market,” said Nelson. “There are many opportunities in our future and we look forward to celebrating many more milestones and successes with our team.”

As part of the celebration, Nelson Laboratory employees, staff and the Nelson Hope Team raised more than $1,000 that was donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The foundation plays a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer – transforming how the world talks about, treats the disease, and helps turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors.
