Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization processes for reusable medical devices are intended to mitigate the transmission of infection between multiple patients in healthcare facilities. However, not all reusable medical devices are intended to be used between multiple patients and/or used in healthcare facilities. Some devices are intended to be used by a single patient and some are intended to be used at the patient’s home (i.e., CPAP masks). Although these devices may have lower risk associated with them, they still need to be properly decontaminated between uses and these decontamination processes need to be validated to demonstrate efficacy.
The intent of this Reprocessing Rethought is to discuss the testing requirements for reusable medical devices that are used in locations other than healthcare facilities and/or are used by a single patient.
