Martell Winters: Director, Scientific Competency
“Whether it is mentoring the next generation of scientists at Nelson Labs or facilitating the Industrial Microbiology and Sterilization class at BYU, some of the most rewarding work I’ve done is to teach others. The work we do in the labs really impacts global health, and I am proud to have been able to be a part of it for more than 20 years.”
Martell started at Nelson Labs in 1994 where he began working on the Radiation Sterilization team and was responsible for bioburden testing and radiation validation studies. His specialties include microbiological process validations and radiation sterilization. Today, Martell serves on many AAMI Sterilization Working Groups and is a highly regarded industry expert who works on the AAMI Sterilization Standards Committee and is the AAMI liaison to the AATB Standards Committee. In 1995, he received his Registered Microbiologist (RM) certification, and in 2001, his Specialist Microbiologist (SM) certification in consumer products and quality assurance microbiology.
Dani: Sr. Manager, Service Center
“I had the pleasure of building a successful, strong team when I developed the Service Center. The team understands and believes in the Nelson Labs mission and elevates the standard of service. I enjoy managing the Service Center where we are focused on finding new, innovative ways of wowing our customers while ensuring professionalism, integrity, and care.”
Dani joined the Nelson Labs team in 2010 as the Accounts Receivable Manager. She was quickly recruited to develop and manage the Service Center at Nelson Labs, which immediately increased quality of service throughout the entire enterprise. She works to create positive, customer-centric solutions across the organization.
Virgil: Laboratory Operations Manager, Media QC and Microbial IDs
“Being part of the Laboratory Support team means taking care of our internal customers so they can take care of our sponsors. We ensure that the highest quality of media and cultures are delivered to the lab, and we continuously monitor the laboratory environment, including Microbial Identification, to ensure our campus meets industry expectations.”
Virgil began his career at Nelson Labs in 2012 as a Quality Auditor – Investigator. In 2019, he was promoted to Laboratory Operations Manager, and currently supervises the Media QC and Microbial IDs departments. He works across departments to ensure that internal sections are supported with required media and cultures for sponsor testing. Virgil ensures that laboratory media, campus-wide Environmental Morning, and Microbial Identification data are compliant with industry standards. Virgil holds an MS degree in Molecular Biology from BYU and the Medical Device Auditor certification from the American Society for Quality (ASQ CMDA).
