ASTM F1862-05:Standard Test Method for Resistance of Medical Face Masks to Penetration by Synthetic Blood (Horizontal Projection of Fixed Volume at a Known Velocity)
In December 2005 ASTM published a new version of ASTM F1862 - Standard Test Method for Resistance of Medical Face Masks to Penetration by Synthetic Blood (Horizontal Projection of Fixed Volume at a Known Velocity) with the objective of resolving some of the sources of variability in the method, resulting in better consistency between test labs. The following is a list of some of the major changes in this standard:
- The specimen holding fixture is described giving specific requirements including the addition of a specimen retaining cuff.
- Addition of a targeting plate - blocks the high velocity leading edge of fluid stream. Blood is shot through a small 0.5 cm hole placed 1 cm in front of sample mask.
- Calibration procedure used to determine the correct reservoir pressure and targeting of the spurt through the target hole to deliver consistently ~2.0 mL of blood through the targeting hole.
- Checking delivery of ~2 mL of blood through targeting hole after every 16 samples instead of after every 8.
Nelson Laboratories is working on validating this new method in conjunction with updating our Standard Operating Procedure. Until this is completed we will be performing the test using a protocol to comply with the current version of the standard.
