The Vitek® 2 Compact is the newest identification system from BioMerieux and is the primary identification system at Nelson Labs. The Vitek® 2 Compact is capable of identifying Gram positive, Gram negative, Bacillus, and yeast organisms.
Study Outline
Identification is based on patterns of biochemical utilization in a 64 well card and through the introduction of Advanced Colorimetric technology. The organism is streaked for pure culture on SCDA/TSA and allowed to grow for 18-70 hours. Once sufficient growth is observed, the organism is gram stained to determine whether it is a Gram Positive, Gram Negative, Yeast or Bacillus organism. Once the organism's type has been determined, it is suspended in 3mL of saline solution and tested on the Vitek® 2 Compact System with the appropriate card type.
