Biochemical test (coagulase, oxidase, PYR test or catalase)
The IDs section at Nelson Labs has several biochemical tests that can be carried out to eliminate or support results from our main test systems. These tests include the Oxidase test, Coagulase test and Catalase test.
An additional Microbial Id's form is recommended when submitting samples for this study.
Study Outline
The most common biochemical test performed in the IDs section at Nelson Labs is the Coagulase test. This test allows the technician to differentiate between Staph. aureus and other species of Staph. This is done by growing up the organism in question along with positive and negative controls. After incubating the organisms for 18-14 hours, they are suspended in a tube of rabbit plasma with EDTA. The tubes are incubated for 3-4 hours after which they are analyzed for the appearance of congealed plasma at the bottom of the test tube indicating the presence of Staph. aureus.
Sample Requirements
Minimum sample size: Organism in viable media culture.
(However, there is a minimum lab charge of $75.00. )
An additional Microbial Id's form is recommended when submitting samples for this study.
