Nelson Laboratories facility in Salt Lake City, Utah U.S.A. is U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Registered. In January of 1996, Nelson Laboratories was certified to ISO 9001 standards by BSI Quality Assurance (ISO 9001:2000), surpassing all of the auditors' expectations. Also, in March of 1997, Nelson Laboratories was certified to EN 45001/IEC/ISO 17025 standards (ISO 17025) by Amtac Certification Services Limited. Our quality- focused personnel are constantly looking for ways to improve and refine systems.
Turn Around
We are continually searching for better ways to efficiently meet the customer's deadline. We are continuing development of automated document control and reporting systems, and we have a Software Development Manager who has the sole responsibility of working with the staff to develop automated programs. We have created an automated sample submission program as an additional time-saving device for the laboratory and our clients.

Due to our extremely productive staff, systems automation, and team purchasing approval, we are able to maintain competitive pricing and high value for our customers.
Our History
Dr. Jerry R. Nelson graduated from the University of Utah with a PhD in Microbiology and was approached by several of his graduate professors with the concept of starting a contract testing laboratory. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had recently codified the Food Drug and Cosmetic Act which established new regulatory requirements for many products including medical devices. His professors provided $15,000 to start the company, and Dr. Nelson always jokes that he didn't know that this wasn't enough to get it done so he did it! The company named MIDECO (microbiological development and control) went on successfully for ten and a half years at which point the company merged with a larger firm called Utah Biomedical Testing Laboratory (UBTL). The merger, although well conceived initially, didn't work out as planned and Nelson family decided to roll the dice and venture out on their own. They gave notice, mortgaged their home, and wrote some very creative financing deals. In October of 1985 they opened Nelson Laboratories on Chipeta Way in Research Park near the University of Utah with five employees and only 40 test offerings. The company continued to grow and eventually moved to the Holladay area (Utah) on 2300 East and 4535 South into the "round building" a 24,000 sq. ft facility that provided several design challenges (e.g., try fitting square equipment into acute corners). The company eventually moved to the Taylorsville area in the year 1994 and built a customized, state-of-the-art 62,000 sq ft. facility.
