Seal Peel Test

The Seal Peel test determines the strength required to pull the seals off porous and non-porous packaging. This test enables manufacturers to see how much strength is needed to pull open a package. Nelson Labs has significant experience performing this test in compliance with ASTM F88, ISO 11607 "Packaging for terminally sterilized medical devices." Nelson Labs is also an active member of the ASTM committees.

The seal peel test is performed in accordance with ASTM F88 Standard Method for Seal Strength of Flexible Barrier Materials. The test is performed by cutting a 1 inch segment of the samples from the appropriate seal ( sponsor and/or manufacture seal). The samples are them placed into the Instron grips and the machine is activated pulling apart the seal. There are 3 methods for pulling the peel which we are able to perform: Unsupported, 90° supported and 180° supported.

Please see our Packaging Validation matrix for more information.

“I had multiple studies done and they were done professionally and on time. I appreciated the extra support provided in developing a cleaning procedure that was compatible with our products. “

Package Testing

Nelson Labs performs dye migration, seal peel, burst, and bubble emission package testing.

The number of test packages needed for this test are at the discretion of the sponsor.  However, Nelson Labs recommends that at least 11 test packages be tested to make sure that the test is statistically significant.
